Crossing Boundaries in Higher Education: Reflections on my EuroSoTL 2025 Keynote

In June 2025, I had the honour of delivering the opening keynote at the EuroSoTL 2025 Conference in Groningen, The Netherlands—a vibrant gathering of educators, researchers, and practitioners committed to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Hosted by the University of Groningen, EuroSoTL welcomed around 300 participants from across Europe and beyond to explore “Making Connections through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.”

My talk, “Bridging Boundaries through SoTL: Paths from the Individual to the Collective,” invited participants to reflect on how SoTL can extend beyond individual inquiry to shape collective practice, cross disciplinary and institutional boundaries, and contribute to transformative change in higher education. We discussed why connecting ideas, people, and practices—especially across disciplines—is essential for enriching teaching and learning and for fostering more inclusive and responsive educational communities.

What stood out most was the inclusive, multidisciplinary spirit of the EuroSoTL community. Conversations spanned diverse perspectives and contexts, underscoring how reflective, collaborative scholarship deepens our understanding of teaching and learning in higher education. The EuroSoTL network continues to be a welcoming space where voices from different disciplines and backgrounds can connect, reflect, and grow together.

I left Groningen inspired by the energy and commitment of this vibrant and reflective community, and more convinced than ever that bridging boundaries is at the heart of meaningful educational change.
